Peter Handke is one of Austria’s leading contemporary writers. Born in Griffen, Austria, in 1942, he published his first novel in 1960 and went on to become an internationally acclaimed author of prose, plays and poetry. He worked with the director Wim Wenders on the film version of his novel The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick, and co-wrote the screen play for Wings of Desire. His novels have been translated into over fifteen languages and his plays have been performed around the world.

The group now includes Insel Verlag (founded in 1902 in Leipzig), Deutscher Klassiker Verlag (established in 1981) and the Jüdischer Verlag (founded in 1902).
