Birgit Vanderbeke
was born in 1956 in Dahme,
Germany. She now lives with her
husband and son in the South of
France. In 1990 she was awarded
the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize for
her first story Das Muschelessen.
Her subsequent stories and novels
have been awarded numerous
prizes, including the Kranichsteiner
Literaturpreis (1997), the Solothurner
Literaturpreis (1999) and the Hans-
Fallada-Preis (2002). Her work has
been translated into Chinese, Czech,
Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese,
Russian, Slovak and Spanish.

was founded in 1886 Berlin by
Samuel Fischer. Many of the authors
that Samuel Fischer published are
now modern German classics,
including Franz Kafka, Arthur
Schnitzler, Hugo von Hoffmannsthal

and Fischer Taschenbuch Verlag both
focus on literature, psychology and
history. Contemporary authors
