Ludwig Hohl, himself an Alpinist, was considered the enfant terrible of Swiss-German literature of his time. For over twenty years he lived and worked in constant material straits and social isolation, making his home in a cellar in Geneva. His talent was recognised by fellow writers, but it was only in old age that he achieved wider recognition.
