Desperate to escape the horrors of the war in Somalia, during which his wife and elder daughter have been killed, Siad, a doctor, and his younger daughter Shara have got as far as Tripoli. Now they are desperate to cross the seventy miles of water to the Italian island of Lampedusa. This moving novel tells the story of their perilous trip on a tiny, rickety and overcrowded boat, their stay in a camp where conditions are almost worse, and their final arrival in Canada. An authentic, meticulously researched account of the horrors of people smuggling, with no holds barred.

Jungbrunnen

was founded in Vienna in 1923. Its aim was to produce high quality books for children whose access to books was otherwise limited. Soon Jungbrunnen developed a clearly structured programme that has become increasingly varied and colourful. It has led the way in publishing well-written books on difficult topics. Many of its books have now become classics and are being read by a third generation of children.
