Lang has a shocking tale to tell. He gives detailed character portraits of the principal doctors who carried out medical experiments on female prisoners in Auschwitz-Birkenau between 1943 and 1945. The barbaric work they carried out leaves the reader appalled and speechless. He also describes the lives – the experience of internment as well as the preand post-war lives – of a number of the imprisoned women whose bodies were used as research material by these doctors. The pain, suffering and humiliation they suffered in the camp seem inconceivable now; and the rage they experienced following the war as they perceived their oppressors were not brought adequately to justice is only too understandable.
