Once a UK, or
other, publisher has acquired the translation rights to a work of literature by
a Swiss writer, and a contract has been signed between the publisher and a
translator, the publisher can apply for translation grants to Pro Helvetia, the
Swiss arts council. The size of the grant will differ from
case to case, but is in general rather generous. Books featured in
New Books in German and bought by a UK
or other English-language publisher are
guaranteed
a grant.

The Swiss Arts Council has been closely involved
with cultural developments in Switzerland since 1939. It supports artistic
work, promotes the arts and encourages cultural exchange at home and abroad.
Pro Helvetia is allocated funds by the Swiss Parliament every four years. It is
independent in its decision-making processes.
