Each year the PEN: Writers in Translation project supports between six and eight books that are translated from a wide variety of foreign languages. The aim is to celebrate books of outstanding literary value, dedication to free speech and intercultural understanding.

www.euclid.infoThe Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the German Publishers & Booksellers Association (Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels) and the German Federal Foreign Office invite applications for translation grants into English of innovative works.
The translation of the respective titles into English is financed with funds totalling 400,000 Euros annually.
They are invited to submit their own choice of titles for which a rights option agreement is already in place, together with a brief summary explaining their choice. The amount of funding is based on the individual case and the actual costs of the translation. Twice a year, the titles to receive funding are chosen by an independent panel made up of academics, specialist journalists and scientific publishers.
The aim is to support wider international dissemination of the results of academic research carried out in Germany and at the same time, to uphold the German language as an academic language and the language of first publications in the areas of the humanities and social sciences.
The judges on the panel are: Prof. Wolfgang Frühwald (honorary president of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation), Dr. Sabine Cofalla (Akademie Verlag), Dr. Detlef Felken (Verlag C.H. Beck), Prof. Luca Giuliani (Institute for Advanced Study Berlin), Prof. Klaus Reichert (German Academy of Language and Literature), Dr. Johan Schloemann (Süddeutsche Zeitung) and Dr. Julia Voss (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung).
