Literary awards in Austria, Germany and Switzerland

Numerous Austrian, German and Swiss literary prizes are mentioned in each issue of new books in german. What are they given for, how do they rate, and when were they instituted? Marilen Daum lists the major awards from all three countries and answers these questions. In naming the winners she provides a rollcall of outstanding writers in the German language since 1995 and before.

This selection focuses on the most important prizes awarded for fiction and poetry written in German. It covers awards in all literary genres, including children's and teenage literature. Each description lists the purpose of the prize, the award criteria and procedure, and the winners of recent years.
