Hansjörg Schertenleib was born in 1957 in Zurich.He has lived since 1996 as a freelance writer and translator in County Donegal, Ireland. His plays have been performed in theatres throughout Switzerland and Germany, as well as other countries of Europe. He has received many prestigious prizes for his work, including the Conrad Ferdinand Meyer prize in 1984 and the Preis der Schweizerischen Schillerstiftung in 1996.
