Adolf Muschg is one of Switzerland's most highly regarded and best loved authors. His work as novelist, poet and essayist has been translated into many languages. He received, amongst other awards, the Hermann Hesse Prize in 1974 and the Büchner Prize in 1994. He is a member of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung, Darmstadt, and the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur in Mainz.

Peter Suhrkamp founded his publishing house in 1950 and was joined in 1952 by Dr. Siegfried Unseld. The group now includes Insel Verlag (founded in 1902 in Leipzig), Nomos-Verlag, Deutscher Klassiker Verlag (established in 1981) and the Jüdischer Verlag (founded in 1902). Suhrkamp focuses on both contemporary literature and the humanities.
