IN BRIEF Angele Steidele
In Männerkleidern. Biographie und Dokumentation.
(In Men’s Attire: The remarkable life of Catharina Margaretha Linck alias Anastasius Lagrantinus Rosenstengl, hanged in 1721.)Böhlau Verlag September 2004, 250 pp.
ISBN 3-412-16703-7A remarkable life indeed and this book traces the story of Linck, a female transvestite who assumed male identity, taking the reader through the stages of her life: Pietist orphanage, wandering prophet with a dissenting sect, soldier in the Prussian army, skilled textile printer and button maker, marriage to a woman, economic dependency on the church, denunciation, imprisonment and execution. All this in 250 pages. A real eye-opener.
