IN BRIEF

Zoran Drvenkar

Yugoslavian Gigolo

Klett-Cotta February 2005, 278 pp.
ISBN 3-608-93733-1

In the last nbg issue Drvenkar’s charming children’s stories were reviewed. Here, by contrast, is an example of his writing for adults – powerfully dark, bleakly compelling, the story of a young man struggling with his identity and losing all sense of morality along the way. Set in Croatia in 1991, in the course of the civil war, Branko has only one dream – to get out. Penniless, his best hope seems to lie in his appeal to women: he gives them what they want in return for cash. A searing tale of violence and broken dreams.

Zoran Drvenkar
Drvenkar was born in 1967 in Krizevci, Croatia. At the age of three he moved to Berlin. His novels, poetry and short stories have won him several prizes for his children’s and young adults’ fiction. Another novel for adults, Du bist zu schnell, sold to Hungary and Romania.
